Maximizing Individual Potential: Supporting the Whole Child

A comprehensive Student Services Program comprised of counselors and specially-trained educators help to ensure students in grades PK3 through 12 realize and achieve their potential as successful learners and contributing members of the school community.

Preventive/Responsive Approaches

The counseling component of the Student Services Program is both preventative and responsive, imparting specific skills and learning opportunities in a proactive manner.  Various support groups, academic coaching, individual counseling and educational programs address a variety of developmentally appropriate topics, including drug and alcohol prevention, anti-bullying strategies, cyber safety awareness and more. Seminars and workshops are also offered to parents, in addition to a resource library and referrals to outside professionals.

  • In Class Guidance

    In keeping with Student Services’ preventive approach, all students in grades PK3 through 9 participate in in-class guidance programs specifically designed to address their social-emotional learning. For over 25 years, Student Services has been facilitating these classes as a way to help build a strong social-emotional intelligence in our students, thus enabling them to better reach their overall potential.

    The fundamental programs used are Lions-Quest
    Skills for Growing and Skills for Adolescence. Collectively, these programs offer developmentally appropriate guidance that covers a variety of topics to help students develop positive, wholesome behaviors, make wise decisions, make positive commitments to their families, school, peers and community, resist negative peer pressure and grow up healthy and drug free. The in-class guidance program supports the overall development of the whole child.
  • Parent Education

    Each year Student Services schedules a series of speakers, experts in their fields, to give presentations and workshops ​for parents on a wide variety of parenting issues.  
    ​Additionally, Student Services personnel are available to meet with parents individually and in groups to offer assistance with parenting questions and concerns.​

  • Individual Counseling

    Individual counseling is available for student​s on an as-needed basis. In keeping with the Student Services philosophy​, individual counseling is provided for a short and finite period of time. Students requiring additional counseling are referred to outside therapists through communication with the student's parents.

Social Emotional Learning & Character Education

The social and emotional development of each student at The Benjamin School is supported by a school-wide Character Education program, developmentally-appropriate researched-based programs at all grade levels, a Middle and Upper School advisor system and an engaging Community Service program designed to instill the value of caring and helping others.
