MS Drone Club Soars to New Heights

The Benjamin Middle School’s drone team is soaring to new heights after its inception earlier this school year. The club is composed of 23 talented 6th, 7th, and 8th grade drone enthusiasts.

Drone Team advisor Michael Saccone said the diverse team of students is not only learning to fly drones but “they are mastering skills that will prepare them for future careers in aviation, engineering, and technology.”

“At each meeting, students hone their skills through a variety of exciting challenges. From racing through timed courses and playing capture the flag, to creating their own unique landing pad obstacles, the team is constantly finding new ways to push their limits and perfect their flying abilities,” Saccone said.

The team also competes nationally against schools from across the country on the Velocidrone drone simulator platform in a league called Drones in School.

Saccone said many of his students consistently rank in the top 10.

“Looking ahead, our team has big plans for the future. We are working toward hosting our own drone competition at Benjamin — an event initially focused on Benjamin students, with hopes to eventually include participants from other schools. We are also looking into traveling to other schools to compete,” Saccone said. “With a strong emphasis on teamwork, innovation, and technical expertise, we hope to provide the foundation for the next generation of engineers, pilots, and tech leaders.”
