Lower School Celebrates 35th Annual Olympics

Lower school students celebrated the 35rd annual Olympic Games the week of February 3, as each grade level representing countries from around the world took to Kennerly Field to compete in a day of field games.

Head of School Dave Faus and Head of Lower School Margaret Granados welcomed students and spectators to the beloved tradition that began in 1990 as an educational endeavor spearheaded by former Head of School Peter Graham.

The Olympic Day celebration is the culmination of a month-long multicultural study that includes the exploration of foreign customs and culture, including a culinary luncheon hosted in classrooms on the eve of the Olympics.

Lower school torchbearers opened the games with a ceremonial lighting of the Olympic flame by before  students competed in a variety of events against their classmates from dashes, to hurdles, relays, and the bean bag toss.

Faculty Olympic Day Coordinator Riordan Cheatham and lower school PE Coach Kathy Bailey worked tirelessly to make the event happen. Bailey said the event is her favorite throughout the school year.

“We [Coach Cheatham and I] feel it encompasses all 12 Benjamin Values. We love seeing the students, parents, and teachers all coming together to cheer for everyone,” she said.
