US Raises Awareness For Suicide Prevention Month

The upper school had the privilege of hosting Minding Your Mind Speaker Colin as part of the school’s efforts to bring awareness to Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. The organization focuses on reducing the stigma around mental health challenges.

Colin shared his story of strength and resilience in the face of depression as a high school and college student. He encouraged those listening in Benjamin Hall to prioritize their mental health and seek outside support, if needed.

Upper School counselor Dr. Renea Yates who coordinated the event, also spearheaded a team of peer advisors and faculty members to participate in a community service walk with members of the Mental Health and Wellness Club.

Yates said students and faculty will wear purple and teal next week in support of suicide prevention awareness and in support of those impacted by suicide.

“Our goal is to raise awareness about suicide and mental health issues, reduce the stigma surrounding it, and encourage open meaningful conversations about mental health,” Yates said.

“I loved Colin’s message of it being okay to not be OK. This message is a powerful reminder that struggling with mental health is a normal part of life. In a high-pressure society, many students may feel the need to appear strong or unaffected by challenges. Hearing this message from someone they can relate to helps to break the stigma around mental health, encouraging them to acknowledge their emotions and seek support without fear of judgment. It validates their feelings and emphasizes that vulnerability is not a weakness but a part of the human experience,” she said.

Yates said she wants Benjamin students to know they have trusted adults on campus who can listen, guide, and offer support through challenging times.
